cornfield stubble

thumbing through

the book of Job

birds of passage

the gentle flutter

of elm leaves

cornfield stubble

thumbing through

the book of Job

1,000 rivets

on the wing

holding it together

midday snow flurry

thinly veiled signs

across the valley

birds of passage

the gentle flutter

of elm leaves

her ashes drift downstream wild asters

summer’s end honeysuckle in my teeth

washing up

before dinner

a winter fly

cricket sounds

his story loops back

to the start

talking politics

my line hangs up

in the lake bed

her ashes drift downstream wild asters

summer sun

coming out of his shell

on the last day of camp

still morning

on the lake

a silent eulogy

searching for stars

in the charcoal sky—

asters underfoot

midsummer moon

a rat scurries

behind the bushes

cool morning air

the old wool blanket

heavy on my chest

coyotes howl

at the strawberry moon

crick in my neck
